- AF System shelf
- Type of product : Furniture
- Client : Format (Sungjisteel)
This project presents a collection of system furniture, lighting, and interior objects developed in collaboration with FORMAT, a brand of Sungji Steel specializing in formwork hardware for concrete construction.
The project begins with formwork hardware that has completed its original role on construction sites. Rather than being discarded, these components are reinterpreted through an upcycling process that preserves the structural logic and material qualities of the original hardware while assigning new functions for everyday use. Surface traces and the industrial character embedded in the material serve as key starting points for the design.
The third product in the collection is a system shelving unit. Standardized formwork components are disassembled, cut, and reassembled to form a modular system furniture piece. Drawing inspiration from the repetitive assembly and disassembly process of aluminum formwork used on construction sites, the design centers on a vertical rail structure, which serves as the core structural element of the shelving system. The shelf rails, derived from the original assembly logic of the formwork, along with newly developed brackets that anchor the system to the wall and floor, ensure both structural stability and visual clarity.
Rather than functioning as a fixed piece of furniture, the shelving system is designed to expand and be reconfigured according to changes in space and user needs. Components originally engineered for functional efficiency in industrial contexts are transformed into elements for everyday storage and display, while the rigid metal structure introduces a sense of order and calm within the space.
This project demonstrates how industrial materials can be given new context and function through design after reaching the end of their original lifecycle. Extended from construction sites into domestic environments, the collection quietly articulates the sustainable potential of upcycling and the role of design in prolonging the value of materials.
- AF Vase
- Type of product : Vase

This project presents a collection of system furniture, lighting, and interior objects developed in collaboration with FORMAT, a brand of Sungji Steel specializing in formwork hardware for concrete construction.
The project begins with formwork hardware that has completed its original role on construction sites. Rather than being discarded, these components are reinterpreted through an upcycling process that preserves their structural logic and material qualities while assigning them new functions for everyday use. Surface traces and the industrial character embedded in the material serve as key starting points for the design.
The second product in the collection is a vase. Standardized formwork components are disassembled into smaller units, cut, and reassembled into a new structure to create a single vase object. Through this process, heavy construction hardware is transformed into an interior object suited to everyday living. Traces of industrial use are not concealed but carefully refined within a restrained form, allowing the material’s previous context to remain visible.
The vase features a grid-like assembly structure derived from the repetitive and modular nature of formwork hardware. This structure recalls an urban skyline, while the contrast between the rigid metal framework and organic plant forms creates a subtle tension and balance. Functionally, the vase is designed to hold water with structural stability, resulting in an object that integrates both sculptural presence and practical use.
This project demonstrates how industrial materials at the end of their lifecycle can be recontextualized through design. By extending construction materials into domestic space, the vase and the broader collection quietly express the sustainable potential of upcycling and the role of design in extending the value of materials beyond their original purpose.
- AF Desk lamp
- Type of product : Lighting
- Client : Format (Sungjisteel)
COG Design Studio collaborated with FORMAT, a brand of Sungji Steel specializing in formwork hardware for concrete construction, to develop a collection of system furniture, lighting, and interior objects.
This project reinterprets formwork hardware that has fulfilled its original role on construction sites through an upcycling process, transforming industrial materials and their inherent structural beauty into objects for everyday life.
The first product introduced in this collection is a desk lamp. Formwork components were broken down into smaller units, cut, and reassembled through a newly designed structure to create a functional lighting object. Materials bearing the traces of industrial use are refined into a restrained form, where they take on a new role—holding and emitting light.
The combination of two distinct materials goes beyond simple form, achieving a unique balance defined by weight, proportion, and contrast.
Three finish options are offered: an untreated version that preserves the material’s original texture, and anodized finishes completed through sanding or hairline processing. These variations allow the lamp to adapt to different preferences and spatial atmospheres.
This desk lamp embodies the transformation of industrial materials at the end of their lifecycle into objects with renewed purpose and value—quietly yet clearly expressing the potential of upcycling and the role of design.
